Saysutshun is the Snuneymuxw First Nation’s traditional name for Newcastle Island, which is now under Snuneymuxw management.
Saysutshun in the Snuneymuxw Hul’qumi’num dialect means “training for running.” Competitive canoe pullers ran its trails to build stamina. It was also where people went for physical and emotional healing and to collect traditional medicines, according to an information website at www.newcastleisland.ca.
